Management is committed to the timely implementation of the Safety, Health & Environment Management System (SHEMS), and to this end will provide necessary resources so as to comply with the relevant legislation, codes of practice and standards.
To achieve these goals, the Company will:
- Provide suitable instruction, training and supervision to all employees
- Provide and maintain systems of work and equipment that are safe and without risk to health or the environment.
- Encourage employees to be proactive in SH&E management
- Monitor the effectiveness and review the SHEMS regularly in consultation with the workforce
The core values of the policy are:
- Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local SH&E laws, regulations, and with other requirements to which Koppers subscribes;
- Pollution Prevention in order to preserve the environment for the health, productivity, and enjoyment of future generations;
- Continuous improvement of our safety, health and environmental systems and performance;
- Communication regarding our business operations and potential risks, both internally and externally.
All employees have a duty of care to exercise responsibility in the prevention of injury, illness and environmental harm, not only to themselves but also to others who may be affected by their acts and omissions.
Compliance with this policy is a condition of employment for all employees.
Environment
At Koppers, we are committed to the sustainability of our environment and therefore choose natural and renewable plantation pine and managed regrowth hardwood resources. We acknowledge our responsibility to public safety and the environment and diligently monitor our operations as a continued effort to maintain this responsibility.
Timber is an environmentally responsible product as trees absorb greenhouse gases during the growth phase, storing the carbon dioxide in the wood fibre and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Timber products require very little energy to manufacture unlike other building materials such as steel, concrete and aluminium.
Koppers actively contribute to the establishment and maintenance of ‘Australian Standards’ and ‘Codes of Practice’ for the safe use of preservative-treated-timber. A continuing effort will be made to provide product information to end-users and the general public via the regular issue and update of related information.
Koppers will provide ‘Standard Specifications’ and ‘Material Safety Data Sheets’ detailing the recommended procedures for the safe-handling and use of the company’s range total of preservative-treated products.
